New York Yankees Alex Rodriguez Photograph with Real Field Dirt From 2008 Yankee Stadium Collage

Alex Rodriguez is arguably today's most complete player and his list of accomplishments is already longer than those of many Hall of Famers. In 1996, his first full season in the Majors, he led the American League in hitting with a .358 batting average and 141 runs scored. In 1998, he became only the third player ever to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in one season, and he hit at least 40 homers in six consecutive seasons, from 1998 to 2003. The 2005 season was yet another extraordinary year for A-Rod, who, as a New York Yankee, slugged 48 home runs, batted .321, made the All-Star Game for the ninth time and won his second AL MVP Award. In 2006, Rodriguez crushed 35 home runs, drove in 121 runs and made his 10th trip to the All-Star Game, and he kicked off the 2007 in monster fashion, blasting seven home runs in the first 10 games and driving in 34 runs in April alone. Rodriguez finished the year with a record 54 HR by a right hand batter as a Yankee and he also finished with 156 RBI, winning his 3rd MVP award. This mini dirt collage comes complete with a 5x7 image of the Alex Rodriguez in action with a detailed nameplate and a circle of genuine dirt from Yankee Stadium.

He called three no-hitters, one of them Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Yogi Berra is seen with the "Sultan of Swat", Babe Ruth, in this memorable photograph. The Art of Children's Portrait Photography

Contemporary photographs that cleverly capture a child’s mood or personality—whether that’s a big, toothy grin or a teary tantrum—are easily created with the tips and techniques explored in this in-depth handbook. Often called “lifestyle photography,” modern techniques such as tightly cropped close-ups, vignettes, wide angles, and shallow depths produce images that are markedly less stiff and more expressive than traditional portraitures. From capturing great expressions and body language to integrating meaningful locations into the shoot to further express the subject’s personality, this guide thoroughly explains how photographers can develop their image-storytelling skills to develop stunning portraits. Advice on creating platinum and chocolate hued prints, vibrant color scenes, simple grayscale images, and utilizing unusual textures or effects is also included.

  • Understanding your subject and tailoring your photographic approach to their unique personality
  • Lighting techniques for studio and location shoots
  • Adopting an organic approach to posing, where simple coaching from the photographer creates natural, photogenic moments
  • Using outdoor environments to best effects and creating a wide variety of studio images with simple sets
  • Tips for effectively and efficiently organizing your business

The Art of Children's Portrait Photography Reviews

Review by Andrew Sabogal:

Talks about the business of children's photography not the art. 2 maybe 3 diagrams of how the picture was taken. No technical info about the photos. Many of the other reviews are more than likey written by friends of the author or folks interested in selling the book. Great pictures in the book and you can get some good ideas on what to look for. Would purchase other books if you are looking for lighting setups and what the picture looks like. Very disappointing overall.

Review by P.M.:

The author did a very nice job in providing information and sharing her experience in the business. If you are looking for technical tips, or how to start on photography, this is NOT the book for you. If you are looking for tips about what is the best way to approach and handle your little clients -from a personality point of view- or add to your own knowledge, this is definitely a valid source of information. I was very pleased with the book and learned lots of aspects I ignored at the time. By the way: If you are in the STUDIO portrait business or thinking of it, this is NOT a book for you either. Content is mostly related to outdoor photography.

Digital Nature Photography: The Art and the Science Reviews

Review by Conrad J. Obregon:

For many years John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide" was my recommended book for beginning nature photographers, even though it was based on film rather than digital media. I sometimes recommended other newer digital books to supplement Shaw but I found no replacement. At last the complete nature photography book for the digital age has arrived.

The Gerlach book tells you everything you need to know to get started in digital nature photography. After a few inspirational chapters, the author discusses equipment for nature photography, exposure, effective lens use, composition, close-up, flash and even the methods of carrying equipment.

When Gerlach (I refer primarily to John, since while Barbara's influence appears throughout the book, instruction is given from his point of view) discusses exposure, he lays out the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and media sensitivity completely, doing a better job than some lighting books I've read. When he talks about the use of the histogram and "blinkies" in setting proper exposure, he even tells you what to beware of in using these tools. Moreover, reference to these tools appears many times throughout the book, so that the beginner will understand the importance of them. The book also recognizes that some equipment of the advanced nature photographer may not make financial sense for the beginner and indicates the alternatives.

When he talks about the use of telephoto lenses, he dispels the misconceptions about depth of field, but does emphasize the importance of perspective control. In discussing flash photography, he describes the use of state-of-the art equipment, like Nikon's CLS system, and even gives suggestions for multiple flash (although he didn't advise me how to use more than one flash for a rapidly-moving bird).

Most of the book is aimed at the technical side of nature photography, although the section on composition does provide some guidelines that will help the photographer find the art in nature photography. The photographs range from accomplished to beautiful, and always support the teaching points.

Sometimes the suggestions while good, seem a little beyond what most of us will attempt. I don't see myself riding a horse through waist deep snow with a string of pack mules with my equipment, but at least the book made me feel the snow shoes in my closet weren't such a crazy investment.

Intermediate nature photographers will probably not pick up much that's new, although the book may serve as a good review of fundamentals.

Now I'm waiting for a book from the Gerlachs that will tell me about getting close to the animals and birds.

Review by J. T. Pater:

This is a very enjoyable book to read for inspiration and learning some photography tricks and tips as well as developing a photographic workflow. As a graphic designer, I was shocked at the quality of the printing of this book. The title on the front cover is enough to send anyone who has an interest in typography, screaming. Other than the poor print quality, the book is filled with photographs that are not only inspirational, but tend to make the reader very envious of the photographic opportunities of this pair of authors who are husband and wife.

This is a smallish book that you can take with you many places if you just want to occupy a few minutes while reading. It will make you want to get outdoors and experiment with your camera. I find the horizontal format of the book a little clumsy to hold. It is good nonetheless for displaying the landscape format of many of the photographs.

Anyone who has an interest in nature photography should definitely check out this book.

Photography and the Art of Seeing: A Visual Perception Workshop for Film and Digital Photography Reviews

Review by D. Booth:

I bought "Photography and the Art of Seeing" knowing nothing about it. I had not even heard of the author, Freeman Patterson. I had a certain expectation based on current photography books of the same genre, but what I found is a book beyond compare.

I would recommend this book to any level of photographer with a desire to truly express themselves through their photography. You won't come away with a list of rules and instructions about when to apply them. Nor will you end up with a cheat sheet of camera settings that achieve particular effects. If you are open to it, however, you will learn new ways to look at, think about, understand, and portray the world you see through the lens of your camera; you will become more empowered to express yourself in your photography.

I was happily surprised that this book is more about photography than it is about the author. Certainly he includes many personal experiences to explain himself and his work, but he does so without the self-aggrandizing rhetoric of similar books. You really begin to feel as if you are part of his process, rather than someone he is trying to impress, as he describes his approach to his work.

And the photos! While they are exceptional, this is not a book to flip through, pause for the pictures, and then put on a shelf. Instead, it lives up to an important word in the subtitle, "workshop." You may never attend an expensive workshop with an accomplished photographer. But Patterson generously provides a workshop that includes intriguing, mind-expanding exercises all for the cost of this book.

Yes, I love this book! So much so that I've ordered two more of Patterson's books, and I can hardly wait to get started on them.

Review by KiwiExpat:

Please don't buy this book. It will change your photography. I bought it, and now I have an advantage, and I want to keep it!

Seriously, this is probably the most disturbing photography book I have found. It will challenge everything you do in photography, and that is unsettling.

If you follow the exercises properly, you will develop a whole new way of seeing and taking photos.

Sure, if you want to, you can read it from cover to cover and go "Ho, hum, very nice." and take it no further. But if you want to improve your photography, take your time, and do the exercises carefully. You will be surprised at the results.

I especially like the one where you lock yourself in a small room (bathroom) and have to take 20 images. "If you don't feel desperation before you finish this exercise, then you have to take another 20 photos."

Don't buy this book! Run away and hide. Keep taking boring photos.

Microstock Photography: How to Make Money from Your Digital Images Reviews

Review by Elen Hawke:

As a stock photographer myself, I've wanted to find more about microstock photography, but there is little information online and I had never seen a book on the subject before this one. Consequently I read Douglas Freer's book with excitement and enthusuasm. I was not disappointed. This book is a gem. It is written in an easy read but informative style and is lavishly but relevantly illustrated. It's a grandiose claim to say that you will find all the information you need to become a successful microstock photographer within its pages, yet I can honestly say that I don't see what else could have been added. The book covers everything from equipment and subject matter to the microstocks themselves and how to submit your images in a way that gives you the best chances of acceptance. Thank you Douglas for such a well written, fun and enlightening read.

Review by But I'm feeling much better now...:

I had thought that I could make a couple of hundred dollars a month with the 100 or so images I have that I would consider salable.' To keep it short, this book explains the work involved in preparing and submitting images, and the need for thousands of submissions to make any real money (00/month) for what amounts to a full time job, not an extension of a hobby. The book is much more than a 'how-to' book, and if you're just interested in making a few extra dollars on the side, like me, I highly recommend you buy it to get the truth about the business.

Digital Portrait Photography: Art, Business & Style (A Lark Photography Book) Reviews

Review by Conrad J. Obregon:

If you want to catch the soul of a subject, this may not be the book for you. But if you want to take a portrait that will show the subject to his or her best advantage, this is a great place to start. (By the way, only a few really great photographers have come close to catching the soul of a subject, and I'm willing to bet that when they started out, they were happy just to produce images that showed a subject to the best advantage.)

This book discusses the fundamentals of formal portrait photography, and not photojournalistic portraiture. Sint starts his book emphasizing the importance of dealing with the subject in a manner that will allow photographer and subject to cooperate in producing a great picture. He next talks about framing the subject, lighting and posing. Unlike other portrait books I've read, the author then touches on makeup. Only after going through these subjects does he discuss equipment, and then he finishes up by examining the business side of portraiture.

Through all of this, one gets the feeling of a practical book. For example, in Sint's discussion of framing, he notes that vertical framing usually works best for groups up to four, and horizontal framing works best for groups of six or more. For groups of five, the format depends on how wide the subjects are! When he discusses cameras, he is quick to say he doesn't favor the top of the line cameras because they are too heavy and too expensive. When he talks about makeup, he tells the reader how to fold a powder puff. The discussion of posing tells you how to deal with the double chin, the big nose and different size eyes. The business discussion shows how to calculate expenses and income if one want to make a living from photography, and, if they take it seriously, may discourage a lot of daydreamers thinking about turning pro. The business discussion isn't the only information one would need, but it aims the reader in the right direction.

The book isn't perfect. I would have liked to have seen a little more discussion of lighting equipment, like flash units and booms, but there was certainly enough information that only a little more research would be required by the aspiring portrait photographer.

The book concentrates on taking portraits rather than post processing. For that aspect of portrait photography I would recommend adding "Skin: The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies" by Lee Varis to your list. But for everything up until you take the card out of the camera, this book will provide you with the practical information you need for portraits with which your subjects will be happy (and that might even make you a few bucks!)

Review by Russell R. Caron:

I met the author, Steve Sint, a few years ago while attending a photography course he teaches at Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine. There, I found Steve to be jammed-packed with top-notch experience from years in the field, and these are experiences he was more than willing to share. A real-life walking photography "encyclopdeia", if you will. The kind of person that walks in a room and instantly seems the light, the color temperature, and the exposure needed for perfect images. Steve's new book, Digital Portrait Photography, is amazing in that it continues in the same vein as the way Steve teaches in person; Steve's love to teach what could be very technical matters in a step-by-step, easy-to-digest manner. This book is incredibly packed with infinite detail and tips, and will become my 'bible' at my portrait studio. I especially like how the book does not just 'show' results, it explains HOW they were achieved, and gives newcomers and even advanced photographers a really good start toward become a professional some day like Steve Sint is for us now. When read with care and interest from cover to cover this text will potentially yield the reader the equivalent of an in-depth college course on the subject. The only thing better, I imagine, would be to have Steve teach you personally. The book is highly recommended.

Food Styling for Photographers: A Guide to Creating Your Own Appetizing Art Reviews

Review by Sabrina Huang:

Finally, there is a Food Styling book for Photographers. I took 2 food styling classes in LA before - the purpose was to understand how food was prepared for the camera and also to see how food photographers setup their lights. I love food photography and read many popular food blogs with their work. So when I know this Food Styling for Photographers came out, I can't wait to order a copy and I was very happy after flipping through the book.

This book gives you many tricks of the trade and notes from photographers with lots of setup photos, both food setup and camera/lighting setup. The printing quality and the page layout are very good - the font size is easy to read, the color pictures are clear, clean and colorful. They gives you details on how to buy the food, how to prepare the food, how to assemble the food, how to plate the food, how to decorate the food, etc. They gives you before, during and final photos.

I also own Digital Food Photography by Lou Manna and Working with Plate by Christopher Styler and David Lazarus. In my opinion, if you are interested in food photography, buy Food Styling for Photographyers and Digital Food Photography and you are good to go. Highly recommend these two books.

Review by Syl Arena:

From the original review on [...]: This recently published book is a fine how-to primer on preparing food for the camera. Bellingham is an Oregon-based stylist. Bybee is a Dallas-based commercial photographer. The detailed content runs the gamut: cold beverages, salads, pasta and sauces, burgers and sandwiches, grilled and roasted meat, vegetables, ice cream, desserts, breakfast and garnishing. My only complaint is not about the information on styling - which is comprehensive and easy to follow. Rather, as a food photographer, I am naturally interested in the sets and photo techniques used to create the hero shots. While there are a number of set shots and brief descriptions of how the shots were created, their small size and limited number suggests that they were an afterthought. Again and again, I wished that Bybee's comments on her vision and process had been greatly expanded into the ample amounts of adjacent white space. Clearly, the book was written primarily for food stylists. A more appropriate title would have been Food Styling For Photography. Nevertheless, Food Styling For Photographers is an important read for both students of food photography and styling.

Photographing Arts, Crafts & Collectibles: Take Great Digital Photos for Portfolios, Documentation, or Selling on the Web (A Lark Photography Book) Reviews

Review by Bess Heitner:

This gorgeous book is a must have for anyone who wants to use a digital camera to maximum effect. Not only are the pictures fabulous, but the instructions and explanations are so simple and straightforward that even someone like me can understand them. I can design beautiful jewelry, but I could never understand how to take a decent digital picture. Now I can. When I first launched my website, I was fortunate to find Steve Meltzer to take my pictures and I've used him exclusively ever since. The first thing people say is how great the photos are and nothing is more important than good photos. Steve is a great photographer, but also has the gift of explaining his craft in a way that anyone can understand. I highly recommend this book. I've already bought six copies and plan to give it as Christmas presents to all my friends who own digital cameras whether they're beginners or pros.

Review by Ionly Wish:

As I searched for books to learn more about how to use my digital camera and create the best photographs, I happened upon this gem of a book. It is a mixture of the art, the fun and the simple and complex information on digital photography. The illustrations and photographs are very helpful to understanding how to create the best digital photographs.

The very best thing about the book is that appeals to the beginner, the average user and to the professional. It also explains in a very clear and simple way the jargon and technical aspects of digital photography.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn how to use and get the best pictures or the person who wants to become a professional digital photographer.

Fine Art Nature Photography: Advanced Techniques and the Creative Process Reviews

Review by Conrad J. Obregon:

One way to analyze any piece of art is from the point of view of form and content. Photography usually seems more concerned with content. Music, on the other hand, having fewer formal counterparts in the real world, seems to place greater emphasis on form. Thus, it came as no surprise to me that the work of Tony Sweet should be a lot more about form than other photographs, because Sweet is a former musician.Sweet's pictures are wonderful. They are rich in color arranged in ways that you rarely encounter in photography. He loves to play with early-morning and late-day light, and mist seems to call him to his camera. His subject is outdoor photography but that just seems to be a carrier for color. Occasionally you will have to look at a picture for a while before you distinguish the content, but while you are looking you will probably be absorbed by the intense tones. You may even look at a picture and say "I never realized the world looked like that!"Each picture is accompanied by a little blurb that tells you what Sweet was trying to capture and the tools that he used to accomplish it. Not all of these tools worked for me. I didn't particularly like the photographs made by making multiple exposures on a single frame and moving the camera slightly between each exposure. On the other hand the greens and blues reflected from a long exposure of falling water made me realize that I ought to be concentrating more on the color in the world around me.If you buy this book hoping it will make you a more creative photographer, then a lot of work will be required. This book notes what the photographer was looking for in his pictures but does not tell you how he got there. You will have to examine the pictures and extract the principles on your own. If you want to develop your creative instincts you will probably be happier with something like Freeman Patterson's "Photography and the Art of Seeing"In today's world there is a tremendous amount of argument about the manipulation of photographs in computer programs. Well, these photographs have been manipulated just as much, but in the camera, through the use of long exposures, light-enhancing filters, and selective focus. If you disapprove of such manipulation, then you may not be interested in these pictures. If on the other hand, you believe with Picasso that "Art is lies that tell us the truth", then you will enjoy this unusual exploration of the visual world.

Review by Bruce Appelbaum:

Sweet's book is basically a portfolio of about 50 images, with camera, lens, filter, and exposure information. The photos are great, but the explanations that go with them are fairly terse and could provide more instruction.
